FAQ

How is JB connected to the Internet?

JB is dedicated to providing its customers with the most reliable and technologically advanced Internet connections available.  JB's web servers are connected to the Internet by way of three Savvis DS3s and a VarioNet T3.  Savvis was rated number one by Boardwatch magazine in their Fall 1997 Internet Service Provider's Directory.

To quote Boardwatch:  "And so SAVVIS Communications swept the entire measurement ratings range for this period.  We think this validates their somewhat expensive, but apparently effective strategy of building private network access points and provisioning them with bought connections to larger networks such as UUNET, Sprint, and MCI.   Although more expensive than free peering at public NAPs, the overall effect is that SAVVIS's performance exceeded that of UUNET, MCI, and Sprint-in connectivity the sum would appear to be greater than the parts.

These three backbone providers together handle in excess of 90% of the Internet's data.   The use of BGP4 (Border Gateway Protocol 4) to intelligently route outgoing data assures the most efficient return path possible.  This means that when a request for data comes to the web servers from the MCI backbone, for example, then more than likely the data will be returned back over the MCI backbone, if that is the most efficient way to return the data.  This method of intelligently routing data across themost efficient of multiple backbones, in most cases, will allow your data to avoid the heavily congested Naps and Maes that are frequently becoming data bottlenecks on the Internet."

What is a "Web Site" Account?

A Web Site Account is a subfolder (or subdirectory) on the domain of your web host (i.e., Joseph Brothers Internet Services) such that the Uniform Resource Locator ("URL") for your web site would be something like http://www.yourwebhost.com/anyname/

Each Web Site Account includes the following:
1.  Hosting for a URL such as http://www.JBNetServices.com/anyname/
2.  Administrative FTP logonID for URL web file and folder management

What is a "Domain Name" Account?

A Domain Name Account is a web site which has an assigned Domain Name such that the URL would be something like http://www.anyname.com, where "anyname.com" is an available domain name, or an existing domain name that is to be transfered to your JB web hosting server.

Each Domain Name Account includes the following:
1.  Hosting for a Domain Name such as http://www.yourclient.com/
2.  Static IP address
3.  FTP folder preconfigured with anonymous FTP logonID
4.  CGI Bin for your use
5.  Administrative FTP logonID for domain Web file and folder management

How do I know if a domain name is available?

You can check the availability of a prospective domain name via the InterNIC's WhoIs domain name search engine at http://www.rs.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois?   Be sure to submit only the domain name and extension you wish to check (i.e. do not include the "www." prefix, or any other prefix, with your request).  Your request should be of the form "yourdomain.ext" where "yourdomain" is your desired domain name proper and ".ext" is either the ".com" or ".org" extension.  You must also be aware that the InterNIC processes requests for domain names of the preceding formats and that they have specific guidelines which they follow to qualify individuals and businesses to the ".org" extension.   If your domain name is intended for use as either a personal Website or a Website for conducting the business and affairs of a company or corporation, then you will likely only qualify for the ".com" extension.  To qualify for the ".org" extension, your company or organization must be officially registered as a non-profit organization with a local or national government agency and evidence of such a registration may be required by the InterNIC prior to processing your domain name request.

How long will it take for JB to create my account?

We create new domain accounts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  If we receive and process your signup prior to 8:00 AM on the day we create accounts, your domain will be set up that day.  If we receive your signup after 8:00 AM on the day we create accounts, your domain will be set up on the following creation day.  We will send you an account configuration Email for your new domain on the afternoon or evening of the day your account is created.

Can I upgrade my account after I sign up?

Yes, you can upgrade at any time.  If you upgrade within 30 days of your account activation, you will not incur an additional setup fee.  However, you will be required to pay the difference between the original setup fee and the setup fee for the upgraded account.  If you are upgrading after your first 30 days, you will be required to pay the setup fee for the upgraded account.

Does JB allow "Adult Sites"?

No, Joseph Brothers Internet Services objects to the hosting of adult content on moral grounds, and will not allow the placement on our web space of any sexually explicit materials, whether they be in graphical, textual, video, sound, encrypted, protected, proprietary, or any other formats.

How can I promote or advertise my web site?

The promotion of your web site may be accomplished in many ways.  The easiest and least expensive way is to list the URL of your web site with the various Internet search engines that allow for free listings.  Our favorite site for multiple search engine listings is Submit! and is located at http://uswebsites.com/submit/.   At the time of this writing Submit! was capable of submitting your request for listing with 40 of the most commonly used search engines.
