How can I create my own
Webpages?
Learning HyperText Markup Language ("HTML") and becoming a web
page developer is not as difficult as you might imagine. One way
to learn HTML is to buy a book on the subject and diligently read and
follow all tutorials and exercises provided. Another and perhaps
considerably quicker way to learn is by doing.
Most newer web browsers such as Microsoft Explorer or Netscape allow you
to download as a file the HTML of the web page you happen to be viewing.
In Explorer, you will need to click on the "File" menu and
then scroll down to the "Save as File" command. In
Netscape, you will need to click on the "File" menu and scroll
down to the "Save As" command. A small window will
appear giving you the opportunity to save whatever web file occupies the
main viewer at the time as a file on a hard drive of your local
computer. Create a directory for this purpose such as
"html" or "download", or whatever, and save the
file. HTML files need to have the extensions of either "htm"
or "html".
To download graphics and images requires that you right click your mouse
cursor on top of the graphic and then "Save As" to another
directory on your computer's hard drive such as "images", or
whatever. If you are using Windows 95 you can then upen up the
folder in which those files reside and "Drag and Drop" them
back into the main viewer of your web browser allowing you to view the
HTML or graphic as it appears on your computer. If you are using
Windows 3.1, or some other operating system, you will be able to view
the downloaded HTML file be using the "File" -
"Open" command from your browser. If you open the HTML
document in "Notepad" or your choice of text editor, you will
be looking at the textual metalanguage of HTML for that web page.
By reading and studying the text of an HTML file, and changing things
here and there, you will soon get an idea of how HTML works and how you
can use existing web pages as a guide in creating your own web pages.
Be careful not to steal these documents and graphics as this would
possibly involve copyright infringements and or plagiarism. To
avoid this outcome, be sure that you merely use the original as a guide
and/or significantly alter your HTML or graphic from its original
appearance. You can also find many HTML tutorials and libraries of
public domain graphics on the Internet.
Will I be able to use
Microsoft FrontPage?
Yes, you may specify at the time you order that you would like Microsoft
FrontPage Extensions installed.
We install FrontPage enabled domains on dedicated FrontPage servers.
These servers have significantly greater RAM and CPU resources, as well
as fewer total domains hosted per dedicated server, so as to maximize
FrontPage performance and reliability.
Our new FrontPage servers support both FrontPage 97 and 98, but
FrontPage 98 appears to be much more stable and reliable than FrontPage
97. For this reason we highly recommend that all our FrontPage
customers upgrade to and use FrontPage 98 at their earliest convenience.
If we are hosting a non-FrontPage domain for you and you would like to
have it FrontPage enabled, please send us an e-mail to request to have
your domain transferred to a FrontPage 98 server and have the FrontPage
extensions installed.
Will I be able to use Microsoft
Active Server Pages?
Yes, you may specify at the time you place your order that you would
like Active Server Pages (ASP) enabled for your domain. Please
refer to our pricing page for fees required to set up your domain
account on a dedicated ASP server.
We install ASP enabled domains on dedicated ASP servers. These servers
have significantly greater RAM and CPU resources, as well as fewer total
domains hosted per dedicated server, so as to maximize ASP performance
and reliability.
If we are hosting a non-ASP domain for you and you would like to have it
ASP enabled, please send an e-mail to request to have your domain
transferred to a ASP dedicated server.
How do I add a counter to my
Webpage?
There is an executable counter CGI script installed in the CGI bin of
every Domain Name Account as well as other data files and folders
containing the various styles of counter font graphics necessary to
operate a counter. There is also a file installed in the root directory
of every Domain Name Account named "counter.htm".
This file contains instructions for the inclusion of the HTML textual
call necessary to create and/or execute the counter script which will
return the graphics corresponding to the number of times your page has
been accessed (hit).
You will also find a complete set of instructions and documentation for
your counter located in the /cgi-bin/doc/ folder of your CGI bin.
There should be ample information in these documents for you to figure
out how to operate this counter. However, if after you have
read the documentation and have attempted to get your counter to work
and you have been unsuccessful, please e-mail us and our support
technicians will try to identify the problem. In your e-mail,
please include the URL of the page which calls the counter and any error
messages you are getting.
Will JB allow me to run CGI?
Yes, every Domain Name Account we host includes a "cgi-bin"
subdirectory off of the root of that domain's web space. This cgi-bin
subfolder has the necessary permissions for you to run Perl, ISAPI, and
other CGI applications (such as ".exe" pre-compiled
executables).
JB's web servers operate only on the Microsoft NT 4.0 platform.
The PERL version currently installed is Perl for ISAPI build 310
available from ActiveSate Software. We recommend that you
pretest your Perl scripts prior to uploading and running them on our
servers. You wouldn't want to test a Perl script with a recursive
loop that crashes our web server because you might inconvenience quite a
few of our other customers located on the same server. You can download
the latest version of Perl for ISAPI which is currently build 315 at
http://www.ActiveState.com/ftp/Perl-Win32/Release/Pw32i315.exe.
While JB allows you to upload and run your own CGI and Perl scripts, we
request that you consider this a privledge and not a right. If you
continually upload baddly written or incompatible scripts that result in
server performance interruptions or crashes, we will ask you to stop
running scripts that are problematic. If we determine that you are
abusing your CGI privledges, we will deactivate your cgi-bin.
Does JB support Java(TM)?
Java(TM) is not dependent upon the host server of the Webpages in which
it is writen. The Java calls made from the HTML of a web page are
not executed by the host web server but are interpreted and executed by
the web browser which reads those HTML calls. Most newer web
browsers such as Microsoft Explorer or Netscape support Java(TM) written
web pages.
Does JB support Realaudio?
Yes, the MIME types for both RealAudio and VivoActive are installed on
JB's web servers and you can, after a fashion, stream your audio and
video files using the HTML protocol. You will need to purchase the
RealAudio or VivoActive production software to create audio and video
files for your web site. |
